August
As summer continues the garden is coming alive. Hydrangeas, Butterfly Plants and others are finding their way in their new homes. The corn, beans and tomatoes are doing their thing and beginning to produce. We will probably be harvesting over a hundred pounds of tomatoes in the next month. The corn is now about 10 feet tall and ears are starting to fatten up. We are looking forward to sweet corn freshly picked in the back yard!
The peaches are done for the season. We didn’t get many as the tree is still very young. Those harvested were very sweet and tasty and made an excellent cobbler. The pears and apples are continuing to grow and will be ready around the middle of October.
We have a comedy routine that regularly appears in the back yard. We installed a squirrel feeder on the garden arch. It is a box with an acrylic front and a lid that can be lifted by squirrels to reach the goodies. Our resident squirrel sits on the lid and continues to get frustrated with his (her?) ability to get to the nuts. Perhaps it IS a ‘her’. She’s probably a California tourist; a valley squirrel.
The resident Steller’s Jays have discovered the peanuts and will complain mightily if we do not keep the nut level high enough for them to lift the lid with their beaks and grab a peanut to immediately hide somewhere near the spruce tree in the neighbors yard. Hmmm… Perhaps the squirrels are letting the jays do the dirty work and are robbing them blind.
